Quintet Private Bank, headquartered in Luxembourg and operating in 50 European cities, announced today the appointment of Rory Tapner as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Tapner – formerly CEO of Coutts and a member of the UBS Group Executive Board – replaces Jan Maarten de Jong, who served as a member of the Quintet Board of Directors for three decades, including as Chairman since 2015. De Jong is retiring after a long and highly distinguished career.
Quintet’s new Chairman brings more than 20 years of board-level experience at financial services firms to this important role. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board at Brown Shipley, Quintet’s UK affiliate, where he will be replaced by Michael Cole-Fontayn, subject to regulatory approval of the latter’s appointment. Cole-Fontayn – who spent more than 35 years at BNY Mellon, including as Chairman and CEO of BNY Mellon EMEA – serves on a number of banking and financial services industry boards.
Over the course of his career, Tapner has held roles such as Global Head of Equity Capital Markets and Investment Banking at UBS, and Chair and Chief Executive of UBS Group’s Asia Pacific businesses. Following more than a quarter-century of service at UBS, he was appointed Chief Executive of Coutts in 2010.
Thanking de Jong for his contribution to the sustained growth of Quintet, George Nasra – Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Precision Capital, Quintet’s shareholder – said: “Over three decades, as the bank expanded its reach and deepened its commitment to client service, Jan Maarten always brought out the best in the firm. We are deeply grateful to him.
“At the same time,” said Nasra, “we are very excited that Rory has embraced the opportunity to serve as Chairman, building upon his achievements at Brown Shipley and his highly distinguished international career. The Board and I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to invest in unlocking Quintet’s enormous growth potential.”
“With a clear strategy, excellent management and ambitious plans for the future, Quintet is poised to challenge the status quo,” said Tapner, who currently chairs a range of organizations, including the University of Buckingham, SPS Technology, GB Snowsport and the London Musical Theatre Orchestra.
“Given my admiration for the firm and very positive experience at Brown Shipley, I’m delighted to assume this new role, working with my fellow Board members and Quintet’s Group Executive Committee.”
“It has been my great privilege to contribute to Quintet’s strategic growth and expansion for so many years,” said de Jong, who joined the Board in 1990 after serving for several decades in a range of senior roles at ABN AMRO. “I’m enormously grateful to my colleagues and to all the firm’s people for this opportunity. I wish Quintet every success in future.”
